Simple Foreign Body Removal
What Types of Foreign Bodies do We Remove?
At Pinnacle Urgent Care we are equipped to remove the following types of foreign bodies:
- Small objects in the ear
- Small objects in the nose
- Fishing hooks in the skin
- Splinters
- Vaginal foreign bodies
- Ring stuck on a finger
- Piece of metal or foreign body on the eye ball surface
What is the Procedure Required for Foreign Body Removal?
Depending on the location it can be as simple as using the correct tool to pull a foreign body
out of the ear.
SKIN FOREIGN BODY (For this, we will use a fish hook as an example).
- The clinician will first clean around the area
- Anesthetize the skin around the hook with lidocaine
- Using a pair of pliers the hook must then be advanced forward to push it forward as opposed to pulling it out
- After removing the fish hook your clinician will most likely recommend a short course of antibiotics to prevent infection
RING STUCK ON THE FINGER
If you start to have finger swelling and are unable to remove a ring from your finger, please
come to Pinnacle Urgent Care for assistance. We can start with a string trick to remove the ring
without having to cut it. Should this not work, we also have a special tool we can use to
cut a ring off. This device has a special barrier between the ring and the finger to ensure only
the ring will be cut and that there is zero change of cutting the finger.
