Hives Treatment

What are Hives?

Hives is a specific type of rash that is caused by substance your body is allergic to. Although there are multiple categories of allergens that can cause hives, often times this allergen is a food or a new medicine. The rash itself often appears as raised red spots or flat red spots. They classically cause considerable itching.

What are the Treatment Options of Hives?

As hives is an allergic reaction, one of our clinicians will recommend one of several categories of allergy medicine.

The following can be used in the treatment of hives:

  • Over the counter antihistamine pills (Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra, Benadryl)
  • Prescription antihistamines: Vistaril (Hydroxyzine)
  • Corticosteroids: Steroid shot or prednisone pills
  • H2 Blockers: Pepcid (although this is primarily for acid reflux it has a role in hives as well)

What are the Other Management Options for Hives?

On occasion when the allergen is not removed, the hives can continue to occur despite taking any or all of the above mentioned treatment options. If this is the case, we recommend following up with an asthma and allergy specialist to further investigate and identify the cause. This can be done through a combination of skin testing and blood tests.

When Should You See a Doctor for Hives?

  • Any rash not responding to over the counter antihistamines
  • Any rash associated with swelling of the face, lips, or mouth.
