What are the Most Common Causes of Fever?

Fever is defined as a temperature of 100.3 or higher.  Although fever can come from dozens of different infections, the following are among the most common we test for at our urgent care facility:

  • COVID
  • Flu
  • Mono
  • RSV
  • Strep
  • UTI
  • Kidney infections
  • Pneumonia

The following are common conditions that we treat but do not test for.  We can diagnose and treat the following conditions with a history of your symptoms, physical exam and occasionally a test to rule out 1 or 2 of the items in the above list.

  • Ear infections
  • Sinus infections
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Stomach bugs/ food poisoning
  • Skin or wound infections such as cellulitis and abscesses

When Should You See a Doctor for a Fever?

Following local patterns through the CDC website for rates of flu and covid can be helpful.  In times of high COVID and flu cases it is advisable to visit us to be tested. You should also see a doctor in any of the following instances:

  • If your are experiencing fever and shortness of breath allow one of clinicians evaluate your need for a chest X-ray. 
  • A skin rash with a fever
  • Fevers lasting more than 2-3 days
