EKG
What is an EKG?
An EKG (Electrocardiogram) is a device used to measure how the electrical impulse travels through the heart to make it beat. With the patient lying down, the medical associate will
attach 12 different monitoring pads to varying locations on the body and record this electrical impulse.
What is an EKG Used to Test for?
The most common reasons for a clinician to obtain an EKG on a patient are:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Abnormal heart rate (too slow or too fast)
- Dizziness
What will Happen if My EKG is Abnormal?
Depending on the reason for the EKG and what the abnormality is, your clinician may discuss treatment options to take at home, recommend following up with a heart specialist called a cardiologist, or recommend further evaluation in the emergency room.
