What are the Signs and Symptoms of Acute Gastroenteritis?
Stomach bugs typically present with the following symptoms:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort or cramping
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
What are the Treatment Options for a Stomach Bug?
Typically the nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can be kept to a minimum by either not eating or avoiding
foods that have fats, oils, grease, or sugar. Replacing all fluid loss by drinking plenty of water is also very
important in preventing dehydration. If the diarrhea is mild/ not profuse and does not contain blood it
is recommended for adults to take over the counter Imodium. In some cases it may become necessary
to visit a Dr to get a prescription for a medication to treat vomiting.
When Should You See a Doctor for a Stomach Bug?
Patients should visit a clinic like Pinnacle Urgent Care if they experience any of the following:
- Frequent vomiting
- Discomfort beyond abdominal cramping
- Blood in stool
- A temperature of 100.3 or higher
- Inability to drink water without vomiting
- Symptoms of dehydration (dark urine, or not making urine, dry mouth, rapid heart
beat, fatigue)
