Acute Bronchitis Treatment
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Bronchitis?
Acute bronchitis is also known as a chest cold. The main symptom of acute bronchitis is a persistent cough lasting anywhere from 1-4 weeks. The cough of bronchitis can be either dry or one that brings up mucus. Wheezing is another common symptom. A small percentage of patients may also experience shortness of breath. Just like the common cold, acute bronchitis can also present with:
Runny nose
Fatigue
Nasal congestion
Throat pain
What are the Treatment Options for Bronchitis?
In adults and children over six years old, the over-the-counter medicine guaifenesin (Mucinex) can help break up mucus in the chest, while dextromethorphan (Delsym) can suppress a cough. Raw honey is also mentioned in medical journals as a safe and effective treatment for both adults and children older than one. For children, a humidifier in their bedroom can also be an effective treatment for night-time cough. In addition, several prescription medications can assist with cough and wheezing.
When Should You See a Doctor for Bronchitis?
Patients should visit a clinic like Pinnacle Urgent Care for a cough associated with wheezing or mild shortness of breath. For severe shortness of breath, it is best to visit your local emergency room. If you are unsure of your condition or treatment needed, we are happy to evaluate you and assess the need for emergent care.
